Suckerpunch.

So I just saw Suckerpunch.

As in it ended 40 minutes ago.

I drove home, then showered, then opened my laptop.

So I just saw Suckerpunch.

WARNING: I'm going to be as general as possible, and will watch the trailer once i'm done to check i'm not giving anything away that the trailer hasn't already, but I really hate spoilers or even extended trailers or anything that will tell me something or give me ideas that I will take in when I go to see a movie. If this sounds like you too, maybe play it safe and read this once you've seen it.

Ok, so the main thing that gets me with movies that have been made recently is that when I leave, there are so many unanswered questions. Or things that just don't make sense, and never will, because the movie was sh*t. Well, that's the conclusion I come to when I walk out of a theatre and my friend(s) ask me what I thought, and then the only answer they can give me is 'because it's a movie'. NOT GOOD ENOUGH.

And, happily, NOT IN THIS CASE.

:)

Every question that I had, little bits of information here, something left open there, a metaphor chucked in to the mix, it all made sense ! It all added up in the end ! And the stuff that was left for you to figure out for yourself, well I figured it out. And liked the fact that the movie wasn't spelt out, not even emotionaly.

Even after watching the trailer, and then up until about half way in the movie, I had a real issue with why the 'I will show you the way' mystic leader dude was in fact a dude. The corruption and injustices of the story were all held by men - so why was the person [that is usually portrayed as the silent hero mystic that is the little voice that makes the lead do the right thing or at least choose a certain path]  a male? That's belittling and frankly on the way to being sexistly* insulting. But all was forgiven by three quarters through, and then especially at the end, where I calmed down a bit and realised that that character had to be a male, or many, including me, would have walked out a bigger man hater than they already were lol.

* [I know this isn't a word. It is now.]

The soundtrack was perfect. I had read previously that quite a few of the tracks were actually sung by Emily Browning, who is Baby Doll in the film. She's also from Melbourne, so Woo Aus ! But as soon as Bjork's amazingly haunting voice started playing through the cinema, I knew that things were just going to get better and better. Heck, I even enjoyed the Tomorrow Never Knows cover [i'm quite pedantic about covers] and my foot was tapping away in the isle. The soundtrack is something i'm definitely going to invest in. The sounds, mixed with the brilliantly grunge cinematography, was something to behold on their own.

One more thing and then i'm done. There'd be heaps more for me to say, but I haven't thought this through very well, and it's late, and I'm not going to re read to check I don't sound like a lunatic, which i probably already do, but anyway back to it.

There were a lot of similarities here with other movies and games, but it fitted well for me. They were either different enough, or were so well balanced and needed in the film that it added to it rather than subtracted.

If they make it in to a game, I really hope they spend some time making it just right, because i'd hate to be disappointed with something that I think could be translated on to a whole 'nother level as a game.

Lastly [i know i lied, but this time it is the last] I just want to of course touch on the aspect of costumes, or lack there of. This goes back to everything making sense. The costumes were there for a reason. As much as some young guys in the audience 'Kaw'ed and made suggestive sounds and comments about the obvious raunchiness of the outfits, to me they weren't things of beauty or happiness or fun. They were symbols of their imprisonment in the world they tried so hard to get out of.

And i'm going to leave it there and go to be.

I hope you saw the movie before you read this like I suggested, and if you did i'd love to hear what you thought. Also, I've read a heap of really negative reviews for this movie, and I think reading a really bad review for something is always disappointing. I've listed some things that I liked about this movie, because hey even I know not *everything* has to be a downer :)

You can watch the trailer at the official site here.

Stranger.

NB - my mouth is dry from popcorn.
